In a case involving a deceased husband, his widow, and millions of yuan given to his former girlfriend, a Shanghai court ruling has set a precedent for estate claims. Following the death of her husband in 2020, the widow surnamed Song discovered that over the course of their marriage he had transferred 3.5 million yuan (US$548,800) to a former girlfriend. The woman, surnamed Li, told Song that she had a relationship with her husband, surnamed Huang, in their youth and had gotten pregnant with his child. However, Huang’s parents opposed their relationship, and the two broke up. Li underwent an abortion at a private hospital, which left her sterile. Feeling guilty, Huang regularly compensated Li until he died. The court ruled that the transferred money was the couple’s joint assets and ordered Li to return half of the total amount.
