A 93-year-old man in Dandong, Liaoning Province hung himself at the gate of his community following a dispute on June 30. In a posted video, a witness said the man needed a permit to go to a hospital for medications for postoperative recovery. As the city was in lockdown due to the pandemic, residents needed a permit from their communities to leave and return. A community office staff member doubted his reason. When the man tried to show his surgical incisions as proof, his pants slipped down. The staff accused the old man of “behaving like a hoodlum” and called police, who reportedly took him away in handcuffs. The man’s neighbors and acquaintances suggested he was likely humiliated by the doctor and officers and wanted to prove his innocence. Local authorities have not commented publicly on the case, and an investigation is underway.
