The latest Science Talk, China’s TED talk equivalent for the life sciences, was held during the Conference of Science and Technology Life 2022, hosted from December 16-18, 2022, in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province. The session’s highlight was a number of young biologists who showed off cutting-edge innovations including nanomaterials, genetic engineering and cellular immunity. Bolstered by information technology, they are working on the transplantation of a liver from one’s own spleen, cheap nucleic acid tests for early cancerous symptoms with one blood drop, green sulfur synthesis and non-invasive brain computer interface. Those technologies, if they come to fruition, could cure type-1 diabetes, enable neural restoration, change the carcinogenic micro-environment and empower the paralyzed with mobility. Interdisciplinary research is crucial because a single subject nowadays is unable to solve complex scientific problems.
