China is to focus on using the digital economy to promote the country’s shared prosperity vision.

According to the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Data Bureau, the plan includes an array of digital economy-related measures which will lessen the digital divide and narrow the income gap.

Officials from the two departments said that the digital economy, as a major driver of economic growth, can significantly increase productivity and greatly promote construction and upgrading of digital infrastructure in underdeveloped and rural areas, helping to share the country’s economic achievements among more people in a fairer way.

The 13 new measures in the plan will encourage the flow of computing power from east to west through a new system that integrates big data and cloud computing. An emphasis on upgrading digital construction in rural and remote areas, such as broadband, telecommunication and digital services, will ensure increased inclusive social services and reduced regional disparities.

This aligns with the government’s goal announced after the first agricultural work conference for 2024 held in late December 2023 that technological innovation should be a big driver of rural revitalization.
