With daily pay and flexible hours, temp jobs have surged in popularity as traditional full-time employment, usually demanding over 10 hours daily in offices or factories, loses appeal. In 2021, the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that approximately 200 million out of China’s 1.4 billion population were in temporary employment, with one-quarter concentrated in first-tier cities. Dissatisfied with low wages and limited time off, young job seekers are turning to short-term or self-employment options. As heavy manual tasks like container handling increasingly become fully automated, women are proving adept at complementary roles like container labeling. Experts view the rise of odd jobs as indicative of social resilience, emphasizing the need for guidance rather than discouragement or interference.
