Field Research Liberates Young Chinese from Fixed Routines

South Reviews November 3, 2025

By NewsChina Updated Jan.1

Inspired by a host of opportunities to conduct field studies offered by South Reviews magazine for the past two decades, many young Chinese students from 700 higher educational institutions have seized the chance to leave their classrooms to explore social issues firsthand. From social disparities caused by urbanization to emotional stress amid social transformation, generations of college students have learned how to think independently and critically based on their observations. Covering a wide range of activities such as teaching at rural schools or investigating the electronic waste recycling, their research has confronted obstacles that are rarely seen in the classroom. However, while seeking solutions, these students have become more flexible and resilient when they are no longer spoon-fed with fixed answers. Experts believe every young generation can excel in one way or another so long as they grow up with a strong sense of duties and independence.
