A photo showing how AI is being used to monitor student behavior triggered heated debate among netizens. Reportedly taken at China Pharmaceutical University, the photo showed how the AI system monitors students while in class, including how often they bend over their desks, pick up their mobile phones, participate in class discussions and read. According to the school, the pilot system monitors facial expressions and motion to help improve efficiency of school management. However, many netizens called it a severe infringement on student privacy. Some argued the system creates a prison-like atmosphere and puts unnecessary mental stress on students. Experts warned that data safety and privacy protection would become the greatest challenge for AI applications.
