Race for Vaccines Must Be Fair

Development of a vaccine for Covid-19 impacts the lives and health of billions of people. It is an international race that involves the overall strength of countries in science, politics and the economy. Against the backdrop of a global pandemic, the history of vaccine research and development has been greatly changed. Generally speaking, it takes seven to 12 years to develop a vaccine, but eight months after the SARS-CoV-2 gene sequences were released, at least eight coronavirus vaccines have entered phase III clinical trials across the globe. Despite the accelerated process, it is important to maintain a balance between the speed of development and vaccine safety and efficacy at a time when different strains of the virus are continuing to emerge in many countries. In order to fight the virus more efficiently, no one country can handle the epidemic. Cooperation and communication on the development of a vaccine should be strengthened. In addition, it is urgent to establish a fair vaccine allocation mechanism and global logistics system.
