State media outlet CCTV recently exposed several unlicensed medical cosmetology training schools advertising they could train anyone to be a cosmetic surgeon in four days. One school offered a six-day course for 12,800 yuan (US$1,983) that taught how to give injections and minimally invasive facelifts, while another four-day facelift course covers sales, promotion and advertising on WeChat. Although authorities launched a crackdown on unlicensed cosmetic surgery in June, the courses teach students how to evade supervision. According to a 2018 survey by DataTechnology.com.cn and the Chinese Association of Plastics and Aesthetics, there were at least 150,000 people working in unlicensed cosmetic surgery. Media has reported on people who have died or were left disfigured from illegal cosmetic surgeries. CCTV appealed for tighter supervision and harsher crackdowns on illegal surgery and training schools.
