A Douyin influencer livestreamed her own suicide on October 15, sparking backlash at the viewers who egged her on and the short-video app’s prevention efforts. In a video posted the day before, 25-year-old “Luo Xiao Maomaozi” told her more than 760,000 followers about her worsening depression. During her last livestream, she drank from a bottle of pesticide. Some of her 1,200 viewers contacted authorities, and she would also call paramedics. She died in hospital. One of her followers told media that she would not have followed through if it were not for some challenging her to “hurry and drink it.” Although lawyers told media that their jeers do not constitute “soliciting suicide,” others argued they had violated public safety laws. Some are also pointing the finger at Douyin for failing to step in. Luo Xiao Maomaozi’s family told media they plan to sue those who encouraged her to end her life.
