China’s air quality has been improving in recent years, with 21.3 smoggy days in 2021 across the country, 2.9 days fewer than the previous year and 35.9 days fewer than the peak in 2003.

The improvement derived from favorable meteorological factors and the country’s increasingly stringent pollution reduction measures, according to the 2021 Atmospheric Environment Meteorological Bulletin issued by the China Meteorological Administration on April 1.

In comparison with 2020, the average density of PM2.5, particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 microns or less, dropped by 9.1 percent to 30 microns per cubic meter. Densities of six pollutants, including PM2.5, PM10, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide have all declined, according to the China National Environmental Monitoring Center.
