Ten people were killed and three are still missing after a torrential flood tore through a scenic area in central China on August 4. According to media reports, authorities had closed Duobi Gorge, an officially undeveloped scenic spot in Hefeng County, Hubei Province to hikers and vehicles since July 24 over flood warnings. The gorge, with its dramatic cliffs and azure pools, had recently garnered internet fame as a must-see place, tempting tourists and local guides to flout the closures despite storm warnings earlier that day. Netizens lamented that the tragedy was preventable and criticized the vain pursuit of snapping selfies at the latest popular scenic spot for social media likes.
